Rachmaninov Preludes (complete) Steven Osborne (piano) Henry Wood Hall, London [ August 2008 TT: 78 mins] Hyperion CDA 67700 This is as good an account of the ever popular Rachmaninov Preludes as any currently available. The recording (Andrew Keener/David Hinitt at Henry Wood Hall) is of demonstration class. The notes by David Fanning are comprehensive; Osborne's own, focusing on his "Tragic Life Story" less so. I'd have preferred the notorious early Op 3/2 (the popularity of which for Rachmaninov became a trial - and it was financially unrewarded) to have been placed last, as an encore.
